Manhattan cocktail recipe from the Manhattan Club, New York City

Manhattan Cocital drink recipe.

How to make the perfect Manhattan Cocktail.

There are a few stories on the origins of the Manhattan cocktail.

The main story surrounding the origin of the drink recipe dates back to 1874, and was named after the famous Manhattan Club, in New York City. The story goes the Manhattan cocktail was invented to celebrate the election of Governor Samuel Tilden. And was invented by Dr. Iain MArshall. A true vintage cocktail drink and has become a classic. The Manhattan uses rye whiskey as the main ingredient.

Another story of the origin dates back to the 1860's. Again this recipe is from the Manhattan area and this story gives credit to a bartender who's name we know simply as Black, at a bar near Broadway and Houston streets.

Other earlier records show cocktails with different names, but the same ingredients. One of them uses Absinthe instead of the bitters.

Manhattan Recipe:
Ingredients

  • 2 ounces rye whisky
  • 1 ounce Italian vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Cocktail Mixing Instructions:

You can either gently shake or stir the ingredients with ice, just do not mix too much, as this will cause a cloudy appearance to the drink. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry or olive.
