Classic Cocktail Drinks: The "Sazerac" Mixed Drink Recipe and History.

How to make the classic Sazerac cocktail drink.

The Sazerac my be one of the oldest cocktails invented in America. The Sazerac cocktail was invented in the early part of the 1800's. The Sezerac first appeared in print in the 1930's. The inventor of this drink was Antoine Amedee Peychaud. He discovered the drink when he mixed Cognac with his eychaud bitters. The drink also used to use Absinthe. Absinthe was used until it became harder to find, then Herbsaint, Pernod or Absente was used. It was the house drink at the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, where the Sazerac got it's proper name by John Schiller in 1859. They both got there names from a popular brand of cognac called Sazerac-de-Forge et Fils. Today it is not clear why but Rye Whiskey is used in place of the Cognac.
This is one of the true classics when it comes to cocktails and mixed drinks.
